The drug belongs to the parent class statin, and though there are many other derivatives of statin also available in the market, they could not earn the same performance due to metabolic reaction with certain body enzymes. Lipitor will lose its patent rights in 2011. Arrow Group, a private drug selling company, was authorized by FDA to sell the generic version of Pfizer’s Lipitor in the U.S territory. But now Watson, one of the major U.S. pharmaceuticals, has bought the rights to sell the generic drug for Lipitor after for $1.7 billion.
How would the generic drug for Lipitor would work?
According to the sources, the generic drug for Lipitor inside the US will be manufactured by Pfizer, which will be labeled with Watson’s name and will be marketed by Watson. Pfizer has agreed to continue manufacturing the generic drug for Lipitor for a certain (undisclosed) amount of commission from the sales. Outside the U.S, Watson will manufacture the generic drug from its own resources.

Lipitor is an anti-cholesterol drug and is facing a tough market competition by its rival drug Zocor. Zocor has now become generic and off-patented and its generic versions are giving Lipitor even more competition. Recent analyses have shown that after Zocor become off-patented, 20% of the Lipitor’s consumers have switched to Zocor. Analysts have even declared Zocor the generic drug for Lipitor, and with increase in Lipitor’s price, Zocor has become even more popular among the consumers.
